The ideal candidate would remove interior and/or exterior coatings from various types of railcars by means of abrasive blasting, which prepares the surface for new coating.
Work takes place in a recycling blast room.
Ability to work in confined spaces and at heights up to 16 feet.
Prior industrial abrasive / sandblasting experience and equipment setup is a plus.
Qualifications:
A blaster's duties require physical stamina, comfort handling 2 blasting hose at pressures up 120psi and attention to detail.
Other essential skills include:
Mechanical aptitude - Ability to comply with instructions in written, oral, and schedule form is essential.
Ability to inspect equipment and maintain it in good working condition.
Physical fitness - Able to successfully complete a near and far distance visual acuity exam with or without corrective lenses.
Able to hold and control pressurized blast hose for extended periods of time.
Blasters may be required to stand or walk on uneven ground and ascend and descend rail cars or ladders, all of which requires stamina and endurance.
Compliance with safety procures - as part of an organization's safety program, blasters are expected to complete the required training program and pass safety examinations and all required qualification and certification assessments.
Interpersonal skills - the ability to clearly, professionally, and effectively communicate with their supervisor and coworkers.
Being able to work as a team is necessary for success.
Flexibility - a blaster may be required to work overtime to meet production needs of our customers.
At times, they may be asked to cross-train, work in other areas, or train new employees.
Blaster Duties and
Responsibilities:
Operate Machinery - The blaster uses abrasive blasting equipment to remove coatings and corrosion from rail cars.
The blaster's control of the pressure and direction of the abrasive material is vital for preventing injury to coworkers, surface damage, and maximizing efficiency.
Prepare Surfaces - Before the blasting, the blaster protects specific areas of the work surface using rubber and steal materials.
Substrate is cleaned of contaminants such as grease and oil, and debris.
Maintain Equipment and Work Area - An important part of the blaster's job is the inspection and maintenance of the abrasive blasting equipment, such as inspecting and changing nozzles, hoses, couplings and gaskets, cleaning recycling system, cleaning dust collectors.
To prevent accidents, it is essential that the blaster's work area is clean and orderly, and that any unsafe working conditions are corrected or reported immediately.
